Welcome to Marko Mikulich's web pages

Marko in his studio with some of his artwork

Hello, I wanted to put a face on this website and tell you something about me & what I do; ..I'm a Certified Medical Illustrator, Biologist, Scientific Photographer, Writer, Instructional Designer, Inventor and Teacher.

In 1968 I graduated from Colorado State University. as a Biologist and a prime candidate for Vietnam. I wanted to stay in school, so I applied for graduate study in Medical Illustration at the University of California, San Francisco — I was 1 of the 2 students selected to study under the Master Illustrator Tom Harris — that was a surprise & honor. The late 60's were a lot of fun in San Francisco with the hippies and whole free love movement.

After I got my Certified Medical Illustration degree I went to work at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Biomechanics at UCSF. It was a great job. I had time to experiment with all sorts of ideas in producing illustrations and photographs. The most fun for me was to go into surgery to illustrate & photograph operations. I stood on a stool looking over the surgeon's shoulder taking notes and photos. Later, I'd take the sketches and photos back to the studio & reconstruct the surgery, so the drawings could be used for books, articles and slide presentations.

In 1975, I started a business called Medical & Scientific Illustration Co. in San Francisco Area Bay Area and did free-lance work up until I was 50, I decided to go back to school studied for a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology at Utah State University. I was interested in designing and building interactive computer-based learning programs. In 1995, after moving back to the West Coast which is home to me, I started the Educational Resource Development Corp. and ERDC Publishing.

Now I'm living in Oregon, writing articles & books, and trying to pass along my skills & knowledge to students....I also enjoy inventing products that work well (see below), the BCW (BurnCare Wizard ®) is a derivative of Aloe vera. The Oregon Lip Balm is formulated from numerous healing herbs and does a great job on dry & cracked lips.

So, I hope you know me a little better and will order books and stuff directly from me.

(5 stars) Illustrate Your Self-Published Book

By Y. Edersby (Eugene Oregon, USA) December 12, 2009

All subjects from illustration, photography, choice of type face, presentation and equipment are described and illustrated in the clearest detail.

An excellent bibliography for further study includes, Pocket Pal Graphic Arts Handbook, Photographing Your Product for Advertising and Promotion and Looking Good in Print.

The large spiral binding which is optional, allows the book to lay conveniently flat when opened while the pages are printed on only one side; so there is plenty of room to make personal notes which can permanently remain with the book.

There are great references for every item and resource needed, which will allow the user to publish their own books with the same high standards as this fine artist and teacher.

(5 stars) A Great Help and Guide to Illustrate and Publish Your Book

By L. Simons (Cottage Grove Oregon, USA) December 10, 2009

I found this book very helpful. The text is always well illustrated and clearly understood.

It covers everything; binding, paper, fonts, digital cameras to scanning photos.

You name it, it's in there.

Any question about publishing and having a book printed is addressed in a well explained manner.

I especially like the binding Spiral).

I can open the book to where I need and it is not damaged and stays flat.

My Other Book Hydronic Heating Madness which has sold well

Hydronic Heating Madness;
Heat Your Home, Cabin, Mobile Home or Workshop for $40-60 a Month

by Marko Mikulich

Here is an illustrated manual for building a simple, safe, inexpensive heating system that uses electrically heated water. This unique system was featured in Rural Living Magazine's winter 2007 issue. It's an environmentally friendly system—emitting NO toxic gases, CO2 & it does not use expensive petroleum products. Winter energy consumption studies were conducted and are documented.
The book Hydronic Heating Madness takes you step-by-step the process of building this simple system. All of the text is clearly illustrated with detailed photographs & diagrams.

Building this system will save you thousands of dollars from the cost of installing a conventional hydronic heating system with its boiler, fancy controls & gadgets.
It's an ideal heating system for heating cabins, small houses & workshops in rural areas where fire insurance is high & where fire fighting services are slow.
This system uses a simple 50 gallon water heater, an inexpensive fan, pump & a car or truck radiator. Click here to see data and diagrams.

BurnCare Wizard (BCW) will take the pain out of workshop and kitchen burns in just a couple of minutes. Strangely enough it works on insect bites too. It is a derivative of Aloe vera - the part that makes Aloe vera juice from the plant work on burns - but it is concentrated. It must be used only on the skin externally, as it is toxic if one would drink it. The same is true with topical treatments such as iodine and bleach. Keep it out of eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes.

That warning aside, BCW is almost magical in the way it works, not only killing the pain in minutes, but promoting healing. No blister even forms, which can break causing a skin disruption and scarring.

What others say about BCW helping them with their burns:

Oregon Lip Balm was developed for my own use - to heal and moisturize my dry - often cracked lips. A tube can last a long time, a year in some cases. The cost is a little more than other lip balms, but it is made with expensive ingredients. Other lip balms may have only a couple ingredients, usually the cheapest. OLB is formulated to heal lips not just keep them moist.

It is made only with natural ingredients such as beeswax, johoba oil, rose hip oil, avocado oil, coconut butter, cocoa butter, shea butter, rosemary extract, pomegranate seed oil, grapefruit seed oil, lanolin and concentrated aloe.

Aloe vera based

Markos Ink is a black waterproof ink that we use in my classes for drawing on almost any surface including acetate. As it flows so well artists are capable of drawing extremely fine lines.

A black waterproof ink that we use in my classes that flows well.

PhotoLift is a chemical that enables an artist or photographer to draw directly on the surface of a photographic print (silver halide [old style print] not a digital print). The print with the ink lines is immersed in PhotoLift and the photograph's tones are "bleached" out, leaving only a line drawing that is very detailed. This process saves hours of drawing time from actually drawing a subject. $60.00
